On May 4, 2021 the Council for Court Excellence (CCE) and the Office of the District of Columbia Auditor (ODCA) hosted a forum "The Future of Policing in the District", which focused on recent calls for police reform and the future of policing in the District of Columbia. That forum was the first in a four-part series hosted by ODCA and CCE in 2021 focused on urgent criminal justice topics in the District. Each public forum featured experts, significant local stakeholders, and impacted people coming together to address an emerging topic of criminal law or policy that is ripe for change in Washington, D.C. This report frames the issue, provides an edited transcript of the forum discussion, and includes a bibliography of relevant resources.

CCE, Bread for the City, the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, Legal Counsel for the Elderly, Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, Neighborhood Legal Services Program, Washington Council of Lawyers, and Rising for Justice sent comments on the initial filing fee for landlord-tenant action.

On April 8, 2021 CCE Board leader Jon Jeffress and CCE's Deputy Director Emily Tatro testified before the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety of the Council of the District of Columbia at the public hearing onB24-0063, the "Second Chance Amendment Act of 2021" and B24-0110, the "Criminal Record Expungement Amendment Act of 2021."

CCE's Casey Anderson testified before the Committee on Housing and Executive Administration of the Council of the District of Columbia at the Performance Oversight Hearing for the Executive Office of the Mayor regarding D.C.'s Clemency Board.

On March 4, 2021 CCE Board leader and Youth Justice Committee Co-Chair Paul Lee testified before the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety of the Council of the District of Columbia at the Performance Oversight hearing for the Office of the Attorney General.

Feedback from community engagement sessions conducted by The National Reentry Network for Returning Citizens during Phase II of the Task Force's work.

The Task Force conducted a survey of D.C. residents incarcerated in the BOP as a part of its Phase II work. This document contains an analysis of those survey results.

Published on February 11, 2021, the Phase II report includes implementation plans for the District Task Force on Jails & Justice's 80 recommendations aimed at reducing the District's reliance on incarceration, investing in the community, regaining local control over parts of DC's criminal justice system, and creating a safe, dignified facility for DC's incarcerated residents. The Task Force is convened by the Council for Court Excellence and partner the National Reentry Network for Returning Citizens.
