Justice System Guides

Courts can be intimidating places for people who rarely need to visit them, and CCE provides guides to a number of court and justice system procedures that many DC residents encounter, to help them understand and navigate those procedures with more confidence.

The most recent guide is an updated edition of our Victim’s Guide to the DC Criminal Justice System, which explains the rights and responsibilities of victims or witnesses to crimes committed in the District of Columbia. Another recent guide explains how judges are selected for the DC Courts and what the backgrounds are of many of the current judges. Another booklet explains the organization of the DC, Maryland, and Virginia state courts systems and of the federal court system, the types of cases each court handles, and the locations and contact information for those courts. And CCE’s most-requested guide explains the DC probate system, which permits many families to settle the financial affairs of their loved ones with only minimal court involvement.
