Stewart Dinner celebrates Jack Keeney and Jim Lyons

What a night! Thank you to all our guests who joined us for the 16th Annual Justice Potter Stewart Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 10.

Our generous sponsors and guests contributed more than $193,000 to CCE’s mission through this event. This fundraiser provides a significant portion of CCE’s annual support so that we may lead our programs improving justice in Washington, DC. This was one of CCE’s most successful years for our Dinner fundraising. Thank you to all who made this possible!

Our honorees, Jim Lyons and Jack Keeney, Jr., were celebrated with heartfelt presentations and standing ovations.

Robert Scott Laura Handman and Chief Judge Royce LamberthThe evening began with a cocktail hour in the tropical garden at the Organization of American States. Special guests included E. Barrett Prettyman, recipient of the Stewart Award in the year 2000. Also joining the celebration were Chief Judge Royce Lamberth, Chief Judge Eric Washington, DC Councilmember Phil Mendelson, and DC Attorney General Irvin Nathan.

Guests ascended the grand staircases and gathered in the ballroom for dinner and the awards ceremony.

Law partners for forty years, Phil Kellogg (Kellogg Williams & Lyons) presented the first award to his colleague Jim Lyons.

Jim Lyons and Phil Kellogg“Simply put,” he said, “Jim Lyons has been a model for me and for many others who know him, of what a real lawyer should be.”

In his acceptance remarks, Jim Lyons said “To receive the Justice Potter Stewart Award for an Unsung Hero is a tremendous honor and at the same time very, very humbling to me.”

Mr. Lyons also acknowledged his friend and mentor Bill Garber, in attendance, who will celebrate 60 years of service at the Bar this October.

The second award was presented to Jack Keeney, Jr., by Judge John Ferren. In his introductory remarks, Judge Ferren said, “[Jack] watches out for injustice, serves as a check on the way the law is administered, and makes those of us who are privileged to judge, judge with keener insight and – dare I say it? – with greater empathy.”

Jack Keeney Jr and Judge John FerrenMr. Keeney spoke of his work with the Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) pro bono department, and of his new professional home at the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia leading the Barbara McDowell Appellate Advocacy Project.

“Given the overwhelming need of so many families in poverty, it is never too early for a lawyer to pitch in for DC’s poor,” he said, “and it is certainly never too late to do even more.”

The Council for Court Excellence is honored to recognize these heroes of justice with the Justice Potter Stewart Award.
