CCE Jury Education Program Wraps Up for the School Year

The Council for Court Excellence’s School Jury Education program had another successful run for the 2012-2013 school year. The program visited sixteen DC public and charter schools throughout the city reaching schools in all eight wards. For the last twenty years, CCE’s School Jury Education program has been visiting area high schools educating future jurors about the jury system and the vital role that jurors play in both civil and criminal jury trials. The classes are taught by judges in both DC federal and superior courts, lawyers and other court administration officials familiar with the jury system.

CCE recently held its last school visit of the 2012-2013 school year at Cesar Chavez Public Charter School for Public Policy. Judge Ricardo Urbina, who retired in May 2012 from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, led the class through a mock jury deliberation after students viewed a mock trial video produced by CCE. Students then engaged in a spirited debate and ultimately reached a unanimous verdict. One student when asked to share his experience as a juror during the mock jury deliberation stated, “Having another person’s life in my hands is a responsibility that I must take humbly.”

The CCE School Jury Education visits will resume later in the fall once the 2013-2014 school year begins.
