CCE Board Director, James D. Bishop, Wins 2014 Scoutt Prize

James D. Bishop, director of the Catholic Charities Legal Network of the Archdiocese of Washington, was named the winner of the 2014 Jerrold Scoutt Prize by the District of Columbia Bar Foundation.  The prize is given out each year to a public-interest attorney who has devoted much of his or her career working with the District’s low-income residents, providing needed legal services with great compassion and proficiency.

“I am deeply honored to be selected as the recipient of the 2014 Jerrold Scoutt Prize through the District of Columbia Bar Foundation,” Bishop said. “From the outset of my legal career, it was always my desire to provide legal assistance and referrals to the low-income and disadvantaged residents of the District of Columbia and the surrounding area.”

During the 20 years that Bishop has served as director of the Legal Network, he has significantly increased the number of attorneys willing to accept pro bono cases; implemented cutting-edge technology; and provided training and technical assistance to other legal services organizations, locally and nationally. Bishop also serves as a supervisor and mediator with the Multi-Door Dispute Resolution Division of the District of Columbia Superior Court’s Family Division. He attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and Howard University School of Law.

“Jim Bishop is an unsung hero of our pro bono community and a deserving recipient of the Scoutt Prize,” said Bar Foundation Advisory Committee member and Prize Committee Chair Fred T. Goldberg Jr., a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

The Scoutt Prize is named in honor of Jerrold Scoutt Jr., a founding partner at Zuckert, Scoutt & Rasenberger, LLP, who was committed to helping the poor get access to legal services. The D.C. Bar Foundation will present the Scoutt Prize on May 15 at the D.C. Bar’s Judicial Reception.

CCE would like to offer a warm congratulations to Mr. Bishop!
