Join the Board of Directors

Joining the Board of Directors of the Council for Court Excellence connects you with local leaders who share your commitment to the effective administration of justice in our community.

The Council is governed by a volunteer Board composed of Directors from the legal, business, civic, and judicial communities. The organization is unique in bringing these groups together in common purpose to address justice system reform and access to justice needs. The Board accomplishes the work of the Council through participation in Council committees and projects. All Directors are presented for approval of the full Board by the Nominating Committee at our semi-annual Board meetings. 

As a volunteer Director, you will enjoy:


Opportunities to take a leadership role in our work improving justice in Washington, DC:

  • Join program committees guiding our mission activity. Committees include: Children in the Courts, Criminal Justice, Public Service and Court Improvements.
  • Take a leading role in project committees that design and execute initiatives benefiting community justice. Committees have included: Jury Education in Schools, Guide to the Juvenile Justice System, Jury Service, Probate Review, Court Observation, various legislative reforms, Bench-Bar-Media Dialogues, and more.
  • Volunteer at Council programs, including: educational programs bringing the jury experience into classrooms, and hosting foreign delegations learning about the third branch of our American democracy.
  • Guide the Council’s work and administration. Committees include: Finance, Nominations, Governance, and Long Range Planning.

Council meetings and events:

  • Attend semi-annual Board meetings where our distinguished Board representatives guide the Council’s mission and program agenda;
  • Enjoy our annual Holiday Reception in honor of the local and federal judiciary;
  • Receive a special early invitation to the Annual Potter Stewart Awards Dinner, the highlight of the Council’s year, where we celebrate honorees who have made significant contributions to the administration of justice in our Nation’s Capital.

News about community justice initiatives:

  • Receive our web publication highlighting the Council’s news and achievements in the community, Court Excellence.
  • Receive special communications about upcoming events and informational briefings on justice-related issues currently being addressed by the Council.

What is required of Board members?

  • Payment of the annual Board dues contribution, and
  • Attendance at our semi-annual Board meetings held in early June and December.
  • We encourage all Board members to engage in at least one area of our programs.
  • Your annual dues contribution, as well as any additional donations, are fully tax-deductible because the Council is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
