Criminal Justice

More
than $42 million has been paid to support over 15,000 DC crime victims
and their families since 1997, as a result of CCE-sponsored legislation.
In
the District of Columbia, public safety costs consume almost 20% of annual
DC Government expenditures and are projected to exceed $1 billion within
the coming decade. Over the years, the Council for Court Excellence has
contributed lasting and progressive results to improve the efficiency
and effectiveness of criminal justice processes in the District of Columbia.
CCE
has consistently tackled difficult issues across the continuum of the
criminal justice system, from the criminal arrest process to adjudication,
sentencing reform, and corrections. At the arrest and charging stage,
the Council continues to promote common-sense reforms recommended in its
2001 Roadmap report to get more police officers on the street while ensuring
the officers' quality of life.
